BLUE GRASS QUINTET FOR STRACHUR
The Stairwell Sisters are one of America's most popular old-time and blue grass Appalachian string bands, drawing inspiration from the mountain music of Kentucky, South-West Virginia, Tennessee and North Carolina – and are now coming to Strachur.
They first came to prominence in the UK in 2007,winning rave reviews at Glasgow’s Celtic Connections Festival. "Their gorgeous modern take on Southern old-time string band music will turn them into the find of this year's festival" (Scotsman) Of course, America had discovered this rowdy old-time quintet much earlier, and they are regulars on the US festival circuit..
Stephanie Prausnitz (fiddle) and Evie Ladin (banjo/clogging) have been steeped so deeply in old-time authenticity that they interpret in that way we normally associate with the true masters, bringing tunes with just the right amount of ‘jive’ to the dynamic delivery. Lisa Berman's stylish approach to the dobro walks a line through country and blues, while Martha Hawthorne (bass) and Sue Sandlin (guitar/tiple) motor the band forward.
A strong feature of the 'live' performance is the clogging and step-dancing of banjo player Evie Ladin. The Appalachian dance styles originated in Scotland, and have developed to become more flamboyant than they were when Scots first crossed the Atlantic to settle in the Blue Ridge Mountains. John Sikorski (originally from Skye), has mastered the original Scots step-dance style and joins in to illustrate the subtle differences that now exist between two national styles.
Their 2009 UK tour coincides with the recent release of their latest album, ‘Get Off Your Money’, given a five star rating by Maverick magazine who said it was “string band fare at it’s best – wonderful.”
All of the sisters sing with intoxicating energy and soul: not only do they entertain but know how to make a get-together glow. So hopefully Cowal residents and visitors will be well prepared to let down their hair and join in the party!
This concert is the first of the international groups coming to Argyll as part of Fiddle Folk and Lochgoilhead Fiddle Workshop’s ‘Hands Across the Seas’ concert series, supported by the Scottish Arts Council and Argyll and the Islands LEADER
